Give a Hoot... Don't Pollute

Litter is a small problem that can get out of hand quickly. An easy way to help combat this problem... if you see litter in our neighborhood, pick it up. Call for a special pickup. (For more information click here.) Sometimes these efforts might not be enough. The city has resources to help. Report chronic problems to the Department of Neighborhood Services.

We'll Leave the Light on for You

Community Liason Officer Kong recommends an easy was to make our street safer, turn your porch light on at night. He explained that most crimes are ones of opportunity, turning your porch light on decreases these opportunities . In addition not only does night lighting makes it easier for us to report the location of suspicious behavior more accurately but it also helps police offices respond to that information more quickly. Starting tonight the 51st Street Block Watch is asking everyone on our block to use thier porch lights at night. A flyer will be handed out asking 2100 block residents to help. At approximately $12.00/year its a small price to pay to keep your house and neighborhood safe.

Area 3 Meeting

Area 3 will host a meeting in front of the Community Garden located on the 2100 block of N. 49th Street. Alderman Willie Hines Jr. will be in attendance. Early Friday evening on July 9 there was an altercation involving a large number of people. 911 was called and the police responded promptly. This the second violent crime in less than a week in Washington Heights. This meeting is a great opportunity to voice our concerns about issues in our neighborhood. The more voices heard, the stronger the message.
